How would you translate "scavenger hunt" in French?

I was geochaching, which is basically a worldwide GPS based scavenger hunt.

I would translate it as a "treasure hunt" instead of attempting to find a cultural equivalent to the scavenger hunt.

Strictly speaking, I don't see geocaching as being much like a scavenger hunt anyway. The scavenger hunt is all about "scavenging," meaning that you are in a race to get a list of things without buying them. "Treasure hunt" is a lot closer to the intended meaning of the sentence, and I'm almost certain it can be translated literally without loss of meaning.

I'm not familiar with either concept of geocaching or scavenger hunt, but to complement Donald's answer, "treasure hunt" translates almost literally to "chasse aux trésors"

If I have to guess, I would say "chasses des charognards". Maybe that helps. Charogne est un nom typique que l'on donne aux animaux qui aime manger les detritus et les cadavres d;animaux.

Literaly, “charogne” is an animal corpse, and “charognard” an animal that feeds on it. Only by extension/abbreviating can the first word be used for the second meaning.
