[meta] Community poll: Should I close the website or move it to a new platform?

Asked by [ Admin ]

Hi everyone,

Sorry for not being very active in the last couple weeks. I am currently living in China and it took some time for me to get a good Internet connection.

Anyways, my question is: should I keep iRosetta alive and move it to a new but similar platform or just let it go since there might be an alternative StackExchange 2.0 language website?

I don't want to fragment the community but at the same time, I think iRosetta has already a some great contributors.

What do you think? Any alternative suggestions?

UPDATE:

From the admin panel: "This site will remain free and operational until at least Tuesday, July 13, 2010." I will make an official announcement in the following days regarding the future of iRosetta... stay tuned.

: what is the deadline for iRosetta? Is it a few months into the future or did we get into at-least-a-year camp?

I interpret “until at least Tuesday, July 13, 2010.” as meaning we did not get into the 1-year-camp. So unless something is done this site goes read-only in about 2 weeks from now.

Update: I got the answer I was looking for. Ask Antimoon will be kept at least until April 2011 and more importantly the intention is to keep it as long as possible. I think it is a very viable path.

Original post:

A possible alternative: merge with or move to another Stack Exchange 1.0 site with a longer life expectancy and higher traffic/activity.

The only site I could find was Ask Antimoon (although I am pretty sure I have seen another one in the past). I have been probing it for a few days, and I think it is viable in terms of similarity with iRosetta. I don't know what their plans are; I have opened a question to get this information.

I don't know what to say. I guess, along with Peter I am curious about the timelines. How long before you have to make a decision? I'll think about it some more, and if I come up with anything I'll chime back in.

I was referred to here from area51, maybe you want to back that proposal or help adapting it to specific needs...?

Update, 2010-06-28: Given the information I have right now, and the time pressure of an effective close-down two weeks from now, I propose:

  1. Move to Ask Antimoon next Tuesday, 2010-07-06T12:00:00Z (that's 1200 hours UTC), by stop of posting questions, answers and comments and post on Ask Antimoon instead.

  2. Post a Community Wiki post here announcing the move. Bump that post (by editing) indefinitely to keep it at the top for newcomers to see.

  3. Somehow backup the exisiting content in case iRosetta goes from read-only to being shutdown. Such that the content is still available in some form online. I think the existing effort should be protected, and it should be possible to refer to the old content (e.g. in case of duplicate questions)

There is minimum friction by moving to another Stack Exchange 1.0 site (although I like the crispness of the iRosetta layout).

I have not looked at other alternatives so don't be shy bringing other alternatives forward.

I would much prefer if iRosetta could be kept for at least a year. But in any case I think we should reach a consensus of where to go next and do it in a lock-step fashion instead of individually go elsewhere. That would destroy the small, but functioning and friendly community here.

We don't know if and when the Stack Exchange 2.0 language website will take off.

Ditto, I enjoy our small town here. If this is a vote, mine is for seeing if we can keep this going…

Can we just pay some money to someone? The Antimoon site is interesting, but way too noisy for me to be paying any attention to. But quite frankly, I am starting to feel fondly for the content that has been built up here. I have more or less been ducking this issue hoping that it would, well, resolve itself. (Lame, I know.) I’ll try to get an email to Oliver directly about this too… Still thinking.. but too busy to resolve on anything specific. :-o
