Partical usage for Transitive vs Intransitive verbs (を vs が)

In reviewing the [grammar][1] for the [JLPT][2] 4, I saw that the following is the standard way to deal with transitive / intransitive versions of the same verb:

  1. まどがあく - the window opens
  2. まどをあける - open the window

Is it ever appropriate to use を instead of が for intransitive verbs?

No. These verbs are deemed two seperate words unlike their English counterpart "open". aku is more like the verb "to become in an open position" (for a door, window, gate etc.) than "to open". akeru, on the other hand is "to open"

Thanks for the answer! Now I just have to remember which verbs are transitive and intransitive. :)

Even native Japanese have problem remembering them, don’t worry :) But from my experiences, I can say that if the verb involves an e sound, it’s transitive.
